I am generally opposed to such holidays, commercially driven and generally hollow. Celebrated by going out to eat, or by a lovely homecooked meal. But This year we will take posession of a new apartment on this very day and feel like we should do something special. The place is pretty filthy and for intents and purposes does not have a kitchen. Does anyone have suggestions for a fancy indoor picnicking experience?

I once attempted this for New Years Eve when I was traveling. I went to a store like Citarella or Balduccis and got an assortment of foods that didn't need to be reheated. Perhaps some good bread, wine, cheese, olives, cured meats?
Is this what you had in mind?

I thinking more like very good delivery- something I have never had. Restaurant food at home. I love doing the wine, cheese, cured meats thing, though.

Freshdirect is offering three different fondue packages prepared by the former chef of OIBL, TIBS, that includes an optional heating element if you don't have a fondue set. I just cancelled my reservation at Danube because we couldn't justify a rushed $400 dinner and I am going to try this. Doesn't seem like a bad deal, salad, desert and breakfast included.

Thanks for the ideas! We are moving in our neighborhood- far west Chelsea. The closing was this morning, but the guy is still in there'til Th. After seeing the place, I think I would rather go camping than attempt a romantic evening.
