I'm taking a study break to meet friends tonight to see Star Wars at the AMC 1000 Van Ness, and I told them I'd bring food. Is there any good cheap tak-out around there? Or at the other end of the California cable car line?

If you have a little extra time, get a muni transfer to take a bus over to Larkin and Golden Gate and pick up some Vietnamese sandwiches.

Whatever you do, resist the temptation to get anything from Cordon Bleu.

I was thinking the same thing -- Saigon Sandwich isn't that far. Cable cars don't take or give transfers, though (boo!), so he'd have to figure out the bus lines.

Hmmm... take BART to Civic Center instead of Embarcadero, walk up Larkin to Saigon Sandwich, and then catch the 19 Polk at Turk and Larkin to Polk and California? Or just walk ... it's not that far for a long-legged young guy like David!

The AMC is further down the hill than California--O Farrell, I think. You could brave Tommy's Joynt just across Van Ness. The roast beef w/au jus used to be pretty good, but it's been years.

Not too cheap but there's a Whole Foods on California & Franklin. Go upstairs instead of taking the pre-made sandwiches downstairs. Gourmet Carousel, the Chinese place on that corner, is good and cheap but might be messy. Ditto for Axum, the Ethiopian place on Polk & Sutter (they have a restaurant in the lower Haight where 3 can eat for about $12); the veggie combo is the best deal.

Last time I went to the AMC, I did bring in a banh mi from Saigon/Wrap Delight. She closes by 6:30 or 7. There's also a tapioca tea stand in the AMC lobby that I've been meaning to check out.

Windy is right--it's at O'Farrell, about 5-6 blocks from California. Unless you're determined to take the cable car, you're better off catching the 38 at Fremont & Market, or taking BART all the way to Civic Center and walking.

IIRC, there's a Thai noodle place at Geary & Leavenworth that has had some positive mentions here. The 38 would take you right past it.

You could also stick to your cable car plan and jump off at California/Hyde and go to the Front Room for pizza or sandwiches.

Way back when they used to do 2-for-1 deals a few nights a week. Can't remember if Thursday was one of them.

Grubstake on Pine between Polk and Van Ness has very good cheesesteak sandwiches and other diner fare. Their homemade apple pie is killer.
