i'll be visiting new york later this summer and hope to finally try the infamous soup nazi. the last two times i was in ny i tried going but the place was closed (heard he closes up shop for the summer.) anyhow, just wondering if the soup is worth all the hype and whether he still closes shop for the summer. thanks!

I assume that you mean Soup Kitchen International. It's pretty insulting to call Al Yeganah "the soup nazi." Seinfeld really screwed up with that one. Al is anything but. Hell, the term nazi is probably the most perjorative term someone can use. So why do it? It isn't amusing and just makes you look bad.

Al Yeganah's Soup Kitchen International closes down longer and longer each summer s he can travel around the world finding new soup recipes and doing research. It's seems that he is closed from around Memorial day to around Columbus day. Yes his soups are great.

Rogue--

I couldn't possibly agree more, and have said so often.

But, everyone, please let's not spin off on a long tangent re: whether "Nazi" is a proper term for him. We're trying to keep this board chowcentric, for the surfing efficiencies of all hounds out there.

I mentioned this earlier but since there's a new thread...

Last year Al didn't reopen until the last week of November. The schedule may have been affected by all the disarray that was going on in the city then but it did take a while for him to open again. He sometimes posts a hand-written sign in the window when he's getting ready to reopen so it wouldn't hurt to take a walk past the place when fall gets here.

By the way, first-time visitors should look at this as more than just a bowl of soup. You'll get what amounts to a complete lunch -- a big piece of fresh bread, a couple of pieces of first-quality fruit and a chocolate. In that context, the price doesn't seem quite as outrageous as it might at first blush. And a lot of the soups are mighty good.

I have hesitated to expend one of my carefully horded NYC meals at the Soup Kitchen. For one thing, it is so difficiult to guess how much fat is in a soup. Seems one way to make soup everyone would rave about would be plenty of creme.

It's not that I'm a Health Nazi (just digging, Rogue) but I find that if I eat too much fat at lunch it ruins me for enjoying dinner.

Anyone have any knowledge or just educated guesses?

The cream soups are fattening, the others are very low fat. The seafood bisque / chowder is almost 0% fat and amazing. in a quart there was more than 1 whole lobster, many hunks of fish, lots of clams and mussels, crayfish, etc. The soups are a good buy. You get what you pay for.

I had a small chicken and vegetable a few years ago [in early May, no less] and it was jam packed with white meat chicken and tons of veggies like whole patty pan squash.

If you go for broth based soups fat is minimal. It really just depends on how greasy the meat and stock are. I was very full after my meal, but it wasn't the heavy sleepy full after too much fat. Even if there was more in it than I thought. It is worth it!!!

Soup Kitchen International, run by Al Yegenah, is between B'way & 8th Ave on 55th St., closer to 8th Ave. Between a Chinese place on corner and a French restaurant.

He's usually not open in the summer, though.

No soup for you!!
