I think that it is a very good restaurant. Not necessarily the cheapest place in the world and the decor/ambiance is a bit on the old side. The food is usually good and in some cases great.

In particular, the grilled Dover sole is great. Also, the olive tapanade that comes with the bread is also good.

I agree. Not cheap, and there is nothing hip or fresh about it -- but very solid classically prepared french food. i've enjoyed the sole as well -- i think it's a specialty, and i have had delicious herb-encrusted lamb there. it's very solid on all the basics, good baguette, foie gras, etc. Perfect pre-theater.

Rene Pujol has been around for eons, and I think it has done a very good job of changing with the times. Yes, it does have a lot of the old bistro classics. But the chef has also updated the menu by adding more creative dishes. Everything is perfectly prepared and attractively presented. Service is polite and very professional.

I agree, too with what the other Chowhounders posted. I used to go to Tout va Bien next door for drinks- a great lively atmophere and sometimes dine at Rene Pujl. My friend Monique works there - her Dad owns the place and it looks a bit old fashioned French style , but it is charming and they did change the menu a bit last fall.
Great sole and yes, the lamb is wonderful so much flavor! The service is excellent. Gracious professional and the servers are knowledgable.

It is in an old brownstone and the upstairs can be rented for small dinner parties. I love the level of professionalism here and food to match!

Bon Apetit!
