i went to the new a salt and battery on 2nd avenue and have to say, i'm impressed! i usually get fish & chips from telephone, where they're consistantly good. but the fish we had last night were top notch. we ordered sole and small shrimp, no chips (thanks to a few recs from this list and my desire to lose a few lbs for summer), a pineapple fritter and two sodas (bitter 'beer' and a dandelion/burdock drink) and it came to 27$. pricey for fast food, but well worth it.

i suggest eating there unless you live close. if you live close, pick it up. i've heard delivery takes too long and it gets soggy.

there's maybe six/eight tables and a 'bar' in the front window great for people watching.

Oooooh, tables? Maybe I'll actually check 'em out.

I was one of the posters who recommended the fish but not the chips. Does the EV have other sides that you saw?

the tables are not much, but you do get some sauces that aren't in the take out 'goodies'. you get a homemade 'tarter' sauce--wasn't impressed--and a couple packs of mayo & malted vinegar. the fish was so good, all i used was a little vinegar.

i can't remember what the other sides were--odd things like a batter fried wiener (?!) and batter fried mars bar (?!?!?!) oh yea, baked beans was one of them. i can't say i've eaten f&c in london much at all, as all my friends there are good cooks.

they do have an all-fried meal and an all fried vegie meal which looked a lot like english breakfast. i'll try them soon, i'm sure.

i also have to say the staff was great. the order taker of course nicknamed me 'no-chips' as i ordered everything with, you guessed it, no chips.

Just spotted them today - I'm almost certain that it's between 3rd and 5th Sts and it's definitely on the east side of the street. I was looking for a coffeehouse in the area where I could have a good latte and read until my movie started at Sunshine Cinema. Ended up having excellent almond cream cake and really mediocre coffee in a Polish diner at 6th and 2nd. Also... tried the Himalayan restaurant that's on north side of Houston just east of 1st. Tiny place with really nice people running it. The salad (shredded cabbage, peas, bean thread noodles and carrots with a very light sesame oil dressing) was healthy but unexciting. The steamed chicken dumplings, OTOH, were light, delicate and tasty. The (appparently) homemade red hot sauce they served on the side was killer - very hot but plenty of flavor too.
