I believe they're in season. I traveled to SE Asia last winter, loved those fruits and am looking for a place to score some.

Anyone know some local sources? I assume many Chinatown markets carry them.

Thanks!

On Saturday I saw fresh rambutan at Manhattan Fruit Exchange in Chelsea Market on 9th Ave @ 15th St. I didn't look at everything on their exotic fruit table, but they may have longan, too.

Longan fruit is a summer fruit - best in June. Used pop them like candy when I spend summers in Taiwan. But since June is the rain season in Thailand, I can see how they are available there in January, when it's actually their dry season.

went to Chelsea Mkt last night for some rambutan. $8.99/lb (outrageous considering the max i've ever seen is $6/lb and that's canadian dollars) and they don't have much of it. as for longan, out of season in the U.S. see tons of it starting in july in chinatown. for some reason chinatown here in nyc doesn't have rambutan. oh, and the rambutan from chelsea mkt were a little underripe.

The NY Times had a small item about rambutan last week; apparently until recently it has not been allowed to be imported into the US, and the current supply comes from limited, 'approved" sources. Hence no rambutan in Chintown, I guess.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure I found rambutan on the streets of Chinatown last year. Right next to the mangosteens, which are in IMHO the most wonderful of all fruits. The prices of both are by Chinatown standards stratospheric (while not quite Dean & Deluca of course), but I fully expect to find both there this year.
