Absolutely, try New Green Bo in Chinatown. It has been the subject of many postings on chowhound. I particularly recommend their soup dumplings, the yellow fish, the salt and pepper baked squid, and the mixed special vegetables. The veggies are superb, not filler veggies like they use in cruddy chinese food. The squid is addictive, especially dipped in the red chili sauce they have on the table. The yellow fish is absolutely original, make sure to dip into the salt on the side.
New Green Bo is on Bayard btwn I think mulberry and mott, right across from the chinese ice cream factory. The address is 66 Bayard.

Cyclo, on 1st ave bwteen 12th & 13th. And their offshoot, Nam, on Reade Street between Church & West Bway. Some friends who spent time in Vietnam absolutely love them, and we who have not also think the food is delicious. Higher prices than cheapie places, but worth it. (BTW: just read in the Times last Wednesday that the owners are opening a 3rd place in Chelsea.)

Try Cong Ly (Hester? Kenmare? between Bowery and Chrystie) for great Vietnamese; also Pho Pasteur and Pho Nha Trang both on Baxter and Bayard.

Thai: nothing good in Chinatown. Would all chowhounds agree? I suggested going uptown just a little ways to 7th St. (between 2nd and 3rd) to a little tiny place called...um...Thai Cafe, or Thailand Restaurant...something like that. Great food and you're still downtown.

I second the recommendation for Wing Wong; I get the impression that this is where the neighborhood sweatshop workers go to eat good solid food. Their soy sauce chicken is a good staple especially with the garlic/ginger condiment.

Manhattan: Pam's Real Thai on 49th and 9th

Queens: Sripraphai 64th st and 39th ave in woodside.

Other than these two, I haven't been to a Thai place that I would call authentic in NYC
