recently i just saw something quite new at one of the meat markets I frequent in chinatown. I forgot what the entire handwritten sign said, but it did contain the "yang" chinese character. The meat look shiny and like fresh innards. this begs the question, is this penis meat? and if so, how does one cook it?

Here in Los Angeles it's sold at the Taiwanese chain stores (99 Ranch, Shun Fat, Phu Ky) and is sold under "bull pizzle". I have no idea how it would be prepared and I'm not about to ask... but my guess would be like any other offal.

Last July a poster at another forum recounted a visit to China where she ate, among other things, ox penis with broccoli. It was braised and she described it as being bland, with a chewy-gelatinous texture.

There's a hot pot restaurant on main street and Northern in Flushing that serves ox penis and testicles. I haven't had the testicles, but the penis is chewy (like tendons) and bland, and were sliced crosswise. I think they par-boil it before serving.

An Asian Grocery that I go to sells several varieties of penis and also uterus, from sheep IIRC. They are always in stock in the pre-pack refrigerated meat section and always look fresh as can be.

I've been wondering if they are used more as a food item or for medicinal purposes?

Not sure he has any source for recipes but Andrew Zimmern seems to consume animal genitalia rather frequently on his shows on the Travel Channel. Could be some associated recipes on the show's website or in his books. Good luck....... I think?
