I had these when I was in Venezuela about 10 years ago; it's a traditional Christmas dish called an hallaca. It's something like a tamale, made with masa meal and filled with meat and olives and raisins, etc, wrapped up in a banana leaf and steamed.
Does anyone know where I might be able to find these? I know they might not be around now because they're seasonal, but there's always next year.....
Flor's Kitchen on 1st Ave between 9th and 10th street always has them. They can be uneven, though. Once when I had them they were moist and delightful. Another time, a bit dried out. One thing is consistent, though--they are incredibly filling! You also might want to post on the outer borough board--I know there are many Venezuelan restaurants in Queens that may have them.
