I need to buy (for a friend) a couple of cases of red wine at a real low price--ideally $4-7/bottle. Hopefully it won't taste like $4-7 wine (no jugs!), so I'm hoping to find (usually) more expensive stuff at closeout price. Anybody know any deals going on right now? Particularly good sales/deals on decent, versatile reds?

I'm figuring it'll probably wind up being Chianti or South American at that price...maybe a Chilean Terra Rosa, if I can find it on sale.

All year round, an unsung treasure for good values in the under $7.00 category is Jeffrey Wine.. very Old New York, and VERY low key (check their "wall of value" to the right as you enter")......on First Avenue between 52nd and 51st Streets. Quite a find, especially in this neighborhood!!!!!!! Directly across the avenue is Ideal Cheese

You should check out www.chambersstwine.com; they have a link for wines under $10. From that selection I would take a chance on the Cadido Salice Salentino, Librandi Ciro Rosso (both Italian), Protocolo Tinto (Spanish) or the Bagieras Bairrada (Portugese). This is a shop with very fair prices and well chosen wines; in its short lifespan it has attracted chowhoundish attention from NYC wine geeks. Stop in and ask for some suggestions - they also have a case discount. They are on Chambers just west of W. Broadway.

The only other place that has consistently good prices is Garnet on Lex. at E68th. Don't expect good advice here.

Cheers,
Joe Moryl

Head over to Costco's for BV (Beaulieu Vineyard) 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon. It's a California wine. I have brought it to many friends homes and it's never failed to please. It normally sells for $12.00 a bottle and they have it for $7.00.

Thanks, Joe, but I know the usual places (though your posting will surely help others). Thing is, I'm not looking for particularly good $7 bottles of wine. I'm looking for particularly good $15 bottles of wine marked down to $7!

There's a TON of marked-down, closed-out, over-stocked wine sold in any given town, and I'm trying to use the chowhound network to determine whether there are any real STEALS out there right now, since I'm buying in bulk.

Yeah, but a lot of $15 bottles marked down to $7 are likely to be:
1) overpriced to begin with (see Morrels).
2) real turkeys if they couldn't sell them at a somewhat lesser discount, especially if they have cases left.

That's the reason I mentioned Chambers; the number of turkeys is low and the prices are fairly good overall (e.g. I doubt anyone could afford to sell the $10 Brun Beaujolais at $5).

Cheers,
Joe Moryl

Personally I don't think that the Protocolo or the Bairrada are such good deals. Same for the Borsao mentioned below. (Though the previous vintage of Borsao rocked.) My fave source for under $10 wines is Nancy's on the Upper West Side. But they are unlikely to have the bargains that the Alpha Hound seeks.

Hey, I was the one who hiped him to it to begin with! And while it's a bargain for $3, I'm more ambitious; looking for a wine that's normally a bargain at $15 marked down to $5-8. It's out there. I'll find it.

Hey, I happen to think that Citra Montepulciano is a swell jelly-glass-red that's worth at least $5 a bottle! ;) I hear you though, Jim, you're looking for the super deal that'll make you double- and triple-check the price. Last year I found '96 St. Francis Old Vines Zinfandel for $10.99 plus a 20% case discount, fruit so huge that I can still taste the raspberry-zin sorbet I made with some of it...shoulda gotten more than one case. Unfortunately that was then and this is now...

I just swung by one of my favorite wineshops, the P.J. Liquor Warehouse on Broadway up at 207th. Tremendously knowledgeable staff and great everyday prices (the Borsao someone else mentioned is $4.99 and a good quaff for that price point). The real bargain that caught my eye isn't a red though, it's Manzinilla La Gitana, a bone-dry sherry for $7.99. Didn't spend too much time there so didn't browse through all of their other specials, but figured it would be worth a mention just in case someone's interested in sherry. Who knows though, they might have something else that better fits your criteria, Jim. Talk to Peter who runs the place, he'll set you up right. (BTW, Peter told me tonight that he intends to create the best collection of sherry available in NYC within the year.)

Oh yeah, Jim, thanks for hipping me to Marino's (along with a whole slew of other joints), I and many other chowhounds really appreciate it!

...hands down the best wine i've had in the past year under $10 (actually, you can get it for around $8) is the 1998 Appolonio Primitivo (though I doubt that it changes much from vintage to vintage). Very fruit forward and ripe(very much like a cal. zin), with nice balance, acidity, and finish. There's an amazing amount of complexity in this wine for the price. Winelibrary in NJ has it and they ship to NYC.

Unfortunatly, most wines under $10 taste like crap. Although there are a few out there worth buying.

hope this helps.

In that price range, I'd try to find a Guigal or Perrin Cotes du Rhone. These are more often around $10 per bottle, but sometimes you can find them as low as $7.

On the other hand, the Walnut Crest Merlot (try the '99) from Chile's Rapel valley can pretty reliably be found for $5-$7, and it is a very round, plummy, enjoyable quaffer for the money.
