La Scene at the Warwick Hotel - SF

We had tickets to the 10:00 show at Yoshi's jazz club in Oakland, but instead of trying to find a place to eat in the East Bay, we stopped in downtown San Francisco and had a very pleasant dinner at La Scene (at the corner of Geary and Taylor in the Theater District). The restaurant is part of the Warwick Hotel, and both the hotel and dining room have a nice European feel. A gentleman played unobtrusive jazz piano in the small bar area and the walls were covered with drawings of entertainers as well as Japanese Noh drama masks, befitting a restaurant that is across the street from the Curran and ACT theaters.

What impressed me the most was that it is quiet, refined, and the tables all have privacy -- none of that being smashed together, digging your elbow into some woman's purse, or hearing your neighbor's dinner discussion (or cell phone conversation!). And the prices are reasonable and service quite professional.

I had the half-dozen oysters (with apple mignonette) and the Idaho grilled trout over saffron-basmati rice. My husband ordered the Wild Mushrooms and Goat Cheese Mousse, and the Grilled Pork Loin. The entrees were substantial portions, but we still went for dessert, sharing the profiteroles (much better than those we'd had at L'Amie Donia in Palo Alto a couple of months ago).

The wine list is also nice and they have an unusually large selection of half-bottles, which we don't run into often. We started with a half-bottle of St. Supery Sauvignon Blanc and then had a half-bottle of Schug Pinot Noir with the entrees.

After 8:00, La Scene offers a prix fixe for only 18.95, which really seems to be a good deal.
