The Greatest Food Movie
I'm sure there have been discussions on this board about food movies in the past, but a recent experience has prompted me to visit the subject once again. I recently rented the movie "Tampopo", as it has been fifteen years since I saw it in the theaters. This has got to be the greatest food movie ever, and best exemplifies the Chowhound experience. I was surprised when I brought up the subject with my young friends in the restaurant business that they not only have never seen this movie, but have never even heard of it! So I must urge anyone with a passion for food who has not seen this film, or has not seen it in a long time to check it out...You will be amazed!

Tampopo, indeed, is the greatest food movie ever, and it's also my ALL TIME favorite film, period. BTW, has anyone seen "Welcome Back Mr. McDonald"? It came out about 3 years ago, produced by the Iron Chef people, about a Japanese radio drama show. Anyway, "Goro" the truck driver from Tampopo makes a cameo, totally in character as the truck driver! A must see for any Tampopo or Iron Chef fan.

re: diligent
Folks, since our request several days to move this thread to Not About Food (since it's not about eating in the Bay Area, and thus does not belong on this board), there've been several new postings.
We ask everyone to self-edit in the first place, or at LEAST respect our requests. The reason this board is useful is because it's focused and on track, with an unprecedentedly high signal-to-noise ratio. If you're looking for great chow in SF, this board is richly dense with great info and tips.
If you value this quality, please do your part to maintain it.
As Melanie Wong pointed out, the thread linked below awaits you.

I'm amazed that nobody has mentioned Babette's Feast. That was a very good food movie about 1988. What made it all the more memorable to me was that one of LA's best resaurants, La Chaumiere, put together a special of reproducing the meal from the movie. They did a great job and it was a very special evening.

This is a fascinating topic (and an evergreen...for the fruits of previous discussion, please see link below).
But please, let's not inflate this potentially huge thread on a regional board. The SF board is exclusively for discussing food in the Bay Area. It's in everyone's interest to see that focus maintained.
So, please, let's move this thread to the Not About Food board (where, if nothing else, you're likely to elicit contributions from a wider range of hounds).
Yes, it's somewhat food related, but we try to conserve "General Topics" board for non-geographical topics more directly pertaining to actual eating. -
Tampopo is also my favorite food movie. A shame that the director is no longer with us but his work remains. I loved that scene where the office lackey is ordering his dinner at the fancy French restaurants.

re: ankimo
I like "Big Night," about two brothers who open an Italian restaurant in 1950's New Jersey. Primo, the chef, refuses to make mediocre food, even if that is what the customer wants. He will only make food so delicious that "you will want to kill yourself!"
