Where to Buy a Free Range Turkey?

  • s

Where can I buy a good organic free-range turkey for thanksgiving (that is, to cook myself, not in a restaurant)? I've bought chickens from the nice farmer at the Union Square farmers market, and they were wonderful (and less karmically-challenged). I'd love to go back to him but I have no idea how to find out if he has turkeys. Any ideas on where to get a good turkey would be appreciated.

  1. New York Magazine suggested a few sources (link below). I called Quattro Farms yesterday and ordered a turkey to pick up tomorrow at Union Square.

Try one of their guinea hens sometime - even better than the chickens!

    1. Quattro Farms does indeed have magnificent and VERY fresh turkeys. I've been buying turkeys from them for nearly 20 years, and every time I "stray," I regret it. I won't name names, but one highly regarded place handed me a turkey that was 80% frozen the day before Thanksgiving, then had the gonads to tell me the bird was NOT frozen, while I stood there, thumping its rock-solid breast.

Anyway, I live very near Union Square, but I do have Quattro's phone number: 914-635-8202.

The domestic birds are $2.75/lb. Wild turkeys are somewhat more.
