Euzkadi (East Village)

  • m

Bottomline.. we loved it..happy to return. It was written up in the $25 an under column of the Times Dining In (10/31), seemed a bit unusual, so we gave it a try. Well worth it. High marks for great food and service, spiffy decor, excellent value - $50 for 2.

  1. Please describe the food. I'm presuming it's Basque?

Pan, you are correct the cuisine is Basque. I ate there on Tuesday of last week for the first time.

The true standouts were; trout wrapped in bacon for an entree - this was truly a great dish, a destination dish. For appetizers the bean salad with figs was very good and the lentil salad with garlic sausage had a delicious mustard dressing. We also had a simple dish of prawns (5 total - with heads still on) sizzling in a small iron skillet with a (IIRC) lemon wine sauce.

Overall the meal was good and the prices reasonable. Although this was only my first trip to Euzkadi I would lean towards Oliva as the better of the "Basquesque" regional restaurants in NY. Just be forewarned - both are very loud and smokey.

Thanks for warning me about the smoke. Because of that, I won't be going.
