Can anyone tell me of a restaurant with great Italian food (not too expensive)on the upper east side. My friends are coming in from England and they are celebrating my birthday with me on Nov. 9th.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I haven't been there in a while, but Firenze is quite good and, at last visit, had good service, too. It's at 1594 Second Avenue (between 82nd and 83rd Streets). It's rather small and intimate.

If you're looking for for something more boisterous, there's always Tony's di Napoli, one block north. The food's not as polished, but it's kind of fun.

Try Maratti on E.62 st. Wonderful Italian seafood in a beautiful townhouse. Reminds you of the real thing. I've always felt it is under-recognized. Not cheap but certainly not as expensive as some.

I rarely get up to the upper east side but about 8 months ago a friend turned me onto a new Italian spot called Mangiarini - on 2nd ave around 82nd st. Its kind of a small funky spot where the prices were moderate (not cheap) and the food quite tasty - I specifically remember a wonderful lemon chicken dish.
Never seen it mentioned on these boards but I think its worth checking out.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I will look into all that you mentioned and then decide where to go.

We love Firenze on 2nd Ave. near 82nd. The pasta is great and so are the main courses, portabello salad with tiramisu being an outstanding dessert. Prices are reasonable. It's small and narrow, so reserve.
