Trip to Cafe Boulud
Went to Café Boulud on Sat night with my wife and another couple. I let the host choose the menu for me
that he was very happy to do. That also seemed to elevate the level of the service.
1) Tomato-Basil risotto the tomatoes were particularly interesting and the risotto was very good but not memorable.
2) Grilled Walu a white Hawaiin fish with a tuna like consistency (good texture) with a dichone radhish like designer vegetable, chopped cilantro, green chilies and topped with mango sauce. The fish was cooked very well and had a seared outside but retained the essence of the fish on the inside. The stuff on top was good and sprinkling the fish with rock salt crystals brought out the flavor well.
3) Warm (cooked) blueberries heaped upon a mound of white formage (not particularly eye opening) but accompanied by pistacchio lady fingers dusted with pistacchio flavored sugar (that were amazing).
Overall, a very good dinner. Notable was the quality of the wines by the glass selection. the Pinot Alsace they had by the glass was one of the more interesting wines I have had. Service was good and friendly.
I would put them on par with other good French bistros I have visited (although the food is not traditional french) - Montrachet and Payard. Not a revelatory meal a la Sugiyama.
