pre-wedding dinner for 30?

I'm getting married in October and have been given the assignment of finding a place in Berkeley/Oakland for family and close friends to have dinner the (Saturday) night before the wedding. Looks like there will be approximately 30 people. I made inquiries at Oliveto but the price is very high, particularly since I've found it to be troublingly inconsistent over time. Bay Wolf doesn't have a space big enough for 30. Any suggestions? I'm trying to avoid the sterile ballroom/convention center syndrome. It can be either a restaurant or a welcoming space with a caterer. Thanks!

  1. You might try Citron--5484 College 510 653-5484. I've had several lovely meals there and often see small wedding parties thre when I'm walking by. I'm not sure if they can handle 30 or not, but it's worth checking out.

    1. We had a wonderful lunch for 40 last fall at the Berkeley City Club. Attendees were first dazzled by the architecture and then by the really good food. They have a couple of lovely rooms. On the site, there is a link titled "meet our chef".

      1. My sister had her pre-wedding dinner at the Thornhill Cafe -- the restaurant has two rooms and we had one of them. I don't know if it was as many as 30, though, although it was close to it. Guests had a choice of two entrees, and the food was good but not so ostentatious that it overshadowed the main point of the dinner, which was for the extended family and out of town guests to relax and get to know each other before the wedding. Parking is easy and the neighborhood feels absolutely safe.

Thornhill Cafe is one of the under-publicized good restaurants in Oakland.
