Not Manhattan but across the Jersey side on Second Avenue in Elizabeth is DiCosimo's Italian Ice. A water ice par excellance that has satisfied the denizens of the "burg" (the Italian section)and the surrounding area for over 60 years. Summer just isn't summer without this classic water ice treat. Smooth and bursting with real fruit flavor, it is made daily on premises in vats almost as old as the establishment. Classic flavors are lemon and orange with surprises such as strawberry, coconut, pineapple and mango. I've even had white grape once. Nothing compares.

I find the ices at Rocco's on Bleecker Street (bet 6th and 7th) to be highly addictive. My favorite flavor is cremolata, though hazelnut and lemon are also excellent.

Ferrara's at 195 Grand Street (though touristy) makes a great espresso ice. They have an outside cart if you don't feel like sitting at a table.

Here are a few of my favorite italian ice places. La Fortuna Cafe on the Upper West Side has an Italian ice stand outside during the summer. They have some yummy italian flavors like hazelnut and cremalotta. I've also enjoyed Roccos on Bleeker Street and Ben's in Soho, particularly their chocolate and lemon.

Sorry to say, but they closed last year (was btn 30 and 31) and the space is now a Japanese restaurant called Iron Sushi Chef. I live around the corner, and always looked forward to when the Italian ice cart would come out in warm weather. Not all flavors were worth eating, but the classics were always good.
