Generally I dine alone at night, which makes it difficult to hit many major pizzerias, who mainly sell full, large pizzas for multiples (i.e. Grimaldi's, Lombardi's, etc.). What pizza places would everyone recommend for solo diners - in other words, selling great pizza by the slice, or sell individual sized pizzas?

Maybe it's the long-repressed college student lurking in me, but I actually much like the slices at Two Boots, and you can happily eat at the counter. The spicy cajun shrimp is my particular (if not at all traditional) favorite.

The Two Boots in Grand Central is the best one to go since it has more of a restaurant feel. I have gone there for dinner and always seen many solo diners - they also sell individual size pizzas that have 4 smaller sized slices.

They have a bar too so you can have pizza and beer/wine!

Giorgio's Brick Oven Pizza on the West side of 2nd Ave. bet. 70th and 71st Streets sell some of their pizzas by the slice. I have had them and like them. However I usually get a pie to go and have leftovers, since their isn't a lot of choice for single slices, it's whatever topping combinations they have already pre-made.

i recently found the best slice of pizza at what may be a really terrific little place. it's called caruso's on 46th between 9th and 10th aves. i had a sicilian slice with ricotta and sweet onions that was sublime. it's a hole in the wall joint, but there's someone in the kitchen with flair and skill. the crust was crisp on the bottom and tender but not heavy with a really good flavor. the cheese was great and the balance of toppings was so perfect. a sprinkling of fresh chopped parsley. they had a pie with slices of potato and one covered with linguine and fresh basil leaves. everyone should go there!

I agree. I've lived in this neighboorhood for three years and only discovered this place last week! It's an actual authentic italian pizzeria, with giant sices for a buck fifty. It's great.

I assume I don't even have to mention Di Fara Pizza
in Brooklyn (Ave J & E. 15, across the street from
the D-line station) -- I doubt there's a place in the
city whose praises have been sung here more frequently
or loudly. And deservedly so: Di Fara's artichoke
slices are just about the best possible argument for
living in New York City.

But this is the Manhattan board, so I'll give you a
Manhattan recommendation: Naples 45, on the north
side of the Metlife building (head up Vanderbilt and
then hang a right on 45th.) Yeah, the ambiance could
hardly be more corporate. But go to the takeout
counter between 2 and 6pm and you can get a very good
margherita or marinara pizza, big enough for two or a
hungry one, made to order for you for a grand total of
$4.50. And you don't even have to actually take it
out: there are scads of tables where you can chow down
while laughing at the people on the other side of the
partition paying four times as much for the exact same
food.

Picasso Cafe on 29th betw Park and Madison serves up a very light and fresh pie. They only serve whole pies but they're modest in size and have ultra-thin crispy crusts. I can easily finish an entire pie.

as you can see from the other posts on this board, it really depends on what hood you need.

in general you can check-in with local italian restaurants to see who makes a good individual pie. it helps if they have a brick oven, look for mention of that on the menu. if a average pie comes fresh out of a brick/coal oven, it can really help the experience.

in any case here are some individual pie and slice options around town not yet mentioned by fellow hounds:

for slices:
the "original" patsy's on first ave & 117th
rosarios pizza on the corner of stanton & orchard
fort lee pizzaria in fort lee, nj - couldn't help it with all the other fort lee activity as of late
bella napoli on madison and approx 31st - also make individuals i think

individual pies:
la pizza fresca on 20th street bet park & broadway
da ciro on lexington and 33rd - - real excellent food
picasso on bleeker - west christopher

good luck

I like California Pizza oven on University place and 12th street. They will make great individual pizzas in their brick oven or you can get a slice from their large pies.

Try the Mike's Favorite: Portabello and Shitake Mushrooms, roasted garlic, pesto, plum tomatoes and goat cheese.

All thin, crispy crust.

PS For me nothing beats the Sicilian crust Pizza at L.B Spumoni gardens on 86th street in Brooklyn.

In my experience, you don't want Pintaile's by the slice (unless the pie is right out of the oven). Their style of pizza takes very poorly to reheating, ending up dry and boring.
