I have to go to a conference today at 53rd & 6th. Have no clue, and no time to figure out where to go. ALL suggestions are welcomed. $3.00-$20.00, something that doesn't take long, but I'd like something tasty of course!

  1. If you want to sit down, Chez Louis on the corner of 6th and 51st or 50th. Roast chicken, good fries, basic bistro stuff. There is a new food court underneath Rock Center-you can enter from the subway station between 50th and 51st. There is a Two Boots, Tossed, Ben and Jerry's, Cucina (salad bar/decent prepared food). On 57th between 5th and 6th is Mangia, similar to Cucina, but a huge, fresh, salad bar. On 57th between 6th and 7th is Angelo's, sit down place for thin crust pizza, pasta. Good luck.

I was just going to post a message to ask if anybody knew where to get a Cobb salad in a sit down restaurant in the same neihborhood when I saw this post .....Rue 57 (on 57th & 6th, pretty good bistro food and sushi, a little pricey but what isn't in midtown) has a good one but I've had it so often I'm getting tired of it....any suggestions?????

Thanks for the suggetions. I wondered around and none of the places I passed by seemed to be what I was in the mood for (which I really didn't know either). I passed by a place called "Menchanko-Tei". I hadn't been there before and as I waited on line to be seated I looked to my right and saw a Jim Leff Chowhound plaque! I said to myself this must be the right place. I ordered the Menchanko and it hit the spot. Except for this glooy blob of white stuff the soup was fine.

          "Gooey blob of white stuff"--mochi?

I don't know what it was, it was square shaped, and like eating wet dough. Blech!

Sounds like mochi--a Japanese favorite, made from sweet rice dough. Not for everyone.
