Real Buffalo Wings! At Ben and Nick's in Oakland.

Last night my roommates and I went to Ben and Nick's, a pub in Rockridge, for dinner. It's a quick bike ride from our house and as the food is consistently good (and the beer is great), we often go there when we just want an easy meal and a beer in pleasant surroundings.

Holly and Alan were both craving burgers, but I noticed that the menu had Buffalo wings on it, and remembering the much-lamented lack of them in the Bay Area discussed recently on this board (see link below), I decided to give them a try.

The wings came and they were just what I had hoped for, maybe even better. They were plump, juicy, and falling-off-the-bone tender. As far as I could tell, they were deep fried and then rolled in the sauce. The sauce tasted like Durkee Red Hot and coated the wings completely. The plate came with a chunky, delicious housemade blue cheese dressing, and some crisp celery and carrot sticks. The wings were resting on a bed of mixed greens that tasted pretty good soaked in red hot sauce.

I was very, very pleased. I am really interested to know what you all think of these wings, since most of the recent thread compared wings here to those available on the East Coast. I grew up in Colorado, where Buffalo wings were standard bar fare. But I'm interested to see if my standards are lower or what. (I've had nothing but disappointing wings here, previous to last night.)

It should be noted that Ben and Nick's has consistently great food, unassuming pub atmosphere notwithstanding. The specials board has a weekly-changing selection of vegetable fritters, savory tarts, and sausage plate. The fried things (french fries, fritters, wings, mozzarella sticks) are always excellent. The only problem I've had there is that they always cook your burger medium-well no matter what you ask for. Maybe next time I'll ask for rare and see what I get. Or maybe I'll just eat Buffalo wings for dinner again.
