<content>Call this a heads-up rather than a report, because I haven't yet tried the food...

About two weeks ago when I was eating in the neighborhood (Pongal--bleah: stale iddly and muddy-tasting spices), I noticed that a fourth (!) kosher, south-Indian veg place was opening on that same block of Lexington (between 27 and 28 Sts.), but it was not yet open.

Today I walked by again and picked up a menu from Saravana Bhavan Dosa Hut. Unfortunately, I had just eaten and was too stuffed to even consider taking something home. First, according to the woman who handed me the take-out menu, they are NOT related to the Dosa Hut in Queens. The menu has the usual suspects: iddly, vada, utappam, dosai, veg curries, and so on. Prices are a bit lower than at the other places in the neighborhood, with dosai and curries only $5.95, soup and appetizers $2.95.

<content>My advice - go at your own risk. This was my worst restaurant experience in the City.

I went with 2 of my friends.
1. We waited long enough for our food. 2 out of 3 orders were mixed up. The first order we told them it was the wrong order, but we let it go. With the second one, I was not going to let it go. So the waiter took it back. But in a few moments, the owner/manager brings the plate back and puts it in front of me, expecting me eat what was brought. No courtesy at all. When he say that I would not give in, he brought me my order.
2. While waiting for our food, an uninvited guest (a huge roach) made a visit. My friend controlled her scream as it trotted towards her. But it was funny to see that even a grown man sitting across from us squeal.
3. On top of all this they charged us $30.00 more. I went to the counter and informed them. Again the owner/manager did not even apologize.
The food was okay, did find hair in my dosa. But the staff especially the owner/manager needs to learn some courtsey, especially in the restaurant business.
