44 & X
- Mark M
I am almost positive this restaurant has been mentioned on these boards but my search came up empty. For the record, its about 6 months old and is on the NE corner of 44th and 10th Ave across from the Hess Station (977-1170).
Decor: Different textured white woods, high ceilings, blond floors, an indoor (for lack of a better word) waterfall behind the bar. Beautiful space.
ps. Check out their bathroom and tell me if these guys are not detail obsessed!
Host/owner (Bruce): Gracious, warm and unaffected. I felt like I was dining in his home. Enough said.
Menu: A combo of "suped up comfort foods" and New American. Menu is pretty large with apps ranging from $8-$16 and entrees from $10-$25. You have the option to eat cheap and simple; a salad appetizer wtih mac n'cheese or a burger entree can be had for under $20 (I know, that is a VERY ny thing to say).
Food: I started with seared diver scallops in celery root puree which were sweet and tasty but a little pricey at $15 for two scallops. For an entree I had their short ribs that were nothing short of exceptional (around $20). My guest started with a fennel and arugula salad in a truffle vinaigrette which was tremendous and then had a delicous crispy sea bass for an entree...too stuffed for desert.
Im looking forward to my next journey over to 10th Ave. Any Hounds been to this place?
The problem with searching for something like 44 & X is that the Chowhound search engine only recognizes "words" of three characters or more. You can work around this using Google Advanced Search, except if you're looking for recent postings, Jim Leff has noted that Google hasn't been indexing Chowhound pages lately.
