Wong Wah Bakery

Went to the Wong Wah Bakery (83 Canal between Allen & Eldridge) on the advice of Aki, and I had the Cheesecake. Oh. My. God.
It was exactly as she described it: light, moist, and not at all like the American heavy cheesecake. Very sponge-cake like.
Yes, it's truly wonderful and I regret not getting anything else, the other pasteries look equally enticing. I'm going back for lunch tomorrow and will report back.

  1. Visted the Wong Wah Bakery again, this time after hitting the Vietnamese Deli on Grand and Broome (another Aki pick). I had no idea that the house special sandwich would be so HUGE at only $2.50. Lightly toasted bread was incredibly fresh and stuffed with lots of roasted pork, pork slices, carrots, cilantro, pickles and a spread I could not identify.
While I was there, someone ordered the fresh squeezed sugar cane juice, which was intriguing.
This time at Wong Wah, I was going to get the cheesecake and something else but at the last moment, I decided to limit my gluttony. I got what seemed to be a chocolate and regular sponge cake. It was two layers, separated by some kind of delish sweet buttery spread. Not as good as the cheesecake. But very good.
I also noted that they have some kind of a pig-in-a-blanket type pastry. Made me chuckle.
