Kuruma Zushi suggestions?

I'm going to Kuruma Zushi for the first time tommorrow night. I've heard great things and would like to know if there are any must orders? Thanks!

  1. The only really 'must do' thing is to order 'omakase' and let Uezo san decide.

      there is one other thing to do: rob a bank before you go. it's worth it.

    2. I did end up making it to Kuruma Zushi and this may sound silly but my favorite of all the fish I had was the maguro (tuna) sashimi. I thought it was betetr than the toro sushi I had, although the toro and scallion roll was also quite yummy.

      I felt like I was entering a secret opium den when I got off the elevator, which opened directly into the restaurant. The only people there were at the sushi bar; all tables were unoccupied. More Japanese than American customers. Everything was good, and I appreciate that the sushi is not too big, as there is a mini-epidemic of dino-sized sushi in this town.

      In terms of very expensive sushi, I think I prefer sushi Yasuda. Maybe its just a matter of style.

      Yes, it was very expensive, although not as bad as some horror stories I had heard through the grapevine.

        Four of us ate at the bar at Kuruma on Saturday night. Because we were going to see "Mnemonic" way over on 10th Ave., we ate quite early, and for much the time were the only people in the restaurant. We pretty much left ourselves in the hands of the chef, and the results were exceptional -- we got to contrast and compare three members of the family that includes hamachi, as well as three types of sardines, for example.

        Two of us also ate at Yasuda about a month ago, also at the bar. We also had the opportunity to contrast members of the same fish family there. It was also a fine meal. However, I much preferred Kuruma, partly because I thought the sushi tastier and partly because it was possible to closely observe the chefs - how they stored fish, how they chose and handled it, etc. The chef was also more personable, interested in San Francisco (our kids are from SF), wanting to know about Cape Cod (our son-in-law was wearing a CC t-shirt).

        On the other hand, expensive as Yasuda was, Kuruma was even more expensive. Neither of these are places to go for anyone on a tight budget.
