Lower East Side Ideas - 71 Clinton too packed!

Any ideas for great food in the Lower East Side? Looking for a special, but not precious spot.
I don't really know what you mean by "special but not precious," and I also don't know what your price range is. The cheapest place I know of in that general vicinity which has great food is Congee Village, but it's a totally different cuisine, of course, and watch out for the customers who smoke wherever they're sitting. I had great food at I Coppi the one time I went there so far, but I think it must be considerably more expensive than 71 Clinton (I haven't been to 71 Clinton, but it seems somewhere in the $30s, based on the menu). And, of course, there's Savoy, which is not cheap - and is it "precious"? I'm not sure if I was helpful.
What about Peasant?
Really good, robust, rustic Italian food. I don't recall the address but it's right there on the L.E.S.
One word (number): 1492. Right on Clinton St. Affordable and delicious. A little chichi looking at first, but you'll get over it when you taste the food.
