Wonderful Meal at Bukhara Grill

Several of us had dinner about a week ago at Bukhara Grill, my first visit to this East 49th Street place, and we all thought it was great. We sat downstairs, back near the waterfall garden, which seemed to us so much more inviting than the more prosaic upstairs room.

Among the starters, the only one that we didn't really care for was the Tawa Crab. Nothing wrong with it, just didn't hit our hot buttons. We did very much enjoy the quails, though, and the chicken malai kabab.

The Tandoor chicken and the shrimp Kandhari were main course standouts, moist and tangy. I ordered the leg of lamb, which, unfortunately, was the only miss among the entrees, as it was a little dry and kind of bland. But there was enough meat to serve everyone twice with leftovers for a doggy bag.

We also ordered the bread basket, a combination of Naan, Onion Kulcha and Paratha, as well as Raita, some Basmati rice and lentils for contrast.

One cavil: I think the Kingfisher beer would have been better had it been a little more chilled.

At the end of the meal, they served us each a small glass of Cognac on the house. Don't know why, but we did appreciate it.

Waitstaff could not have been friendlier or more accommodating. When we got there they started us up the stairs, but I said we would prefer a booth, so they smiled, turned around and gave us the desired booth, no problem. Our waiter took a lot of time to explain the various dishes to us, which I always appreciate.

As stated before, the ambiance is very soothing and relaxing, at least if you're seated near the garden with the running water.

All in all, we really liked this place and we'll go back.

Prices are high for this type of cuisine, but not outrageous. We averaged about $70 PP after tax and tip.

I've never been there for dinner, but have enjoyed their lunchtime buffet on many occasions. A good selection of excellent dishes for a much more modest $13.95. If only they offered it on weekends!
