Where to find a good Vietnamese sandwich (bahn mi?)
I was reading through a discussion on Vietnamese sandwiches (called bahn mi I guess?) in the SF message board and was intrigued. Can anyone tell me of a place to find a good one in Manhattan? I must admit I've never actually tried one, and am interested in experiencing the Viet-French fusion of this thing, with Viet-French toppings served on a crusty French roll. Sounds very interesting!
Pepper pointed out to me the Vietnamese sandwich shop at Grand and Mott. Pretty damn good and they also have that pork sashimi.

there's a really good vietamese sandwich shop on broom st., between mott and elizabeth. they only offer two sandwiches, chicken and pork, but both are delicious and really inexpensive ($2.50). the folks that run the shop, which seems to push various juices more than sandwiches, are very friendly.

Check the SF board or use the search function; there is a thread there about bahn mi in the Bay Area.

They make a good vietnamese sandwich at a place that I have always known as "vetnam sandwich" on the corner of Broadway and Columbus on the North Western side of the street. Its a place no bigger than a New York bedroom. next to Sam's..enjoy.

You may want to find a new favorite. A recent sandwich from Viet Nam restaurant was pathetic.

My coworker just got us Vietnamese sandiches / Bahn Mi-s from Grand & Mott -- "Saigon Bakery" -- its a Jewlery store with Bahn Mi-s in the back.
These were simply put the best sandwhiches ever. The pork is super slow roasted and tasty, cucumber to cool you down, jalapenos to give it some kick. As for it spicy!

That's my favorite as well.

The Vietnamese sandwich shop in the lower level of Grand Central Terminal has gotten some good food reviews. I've been very curious but haven't tried it yet. If you haven't been to Grand Central lately, it's food paradise!

there are several threads in the archives discussing vietnemese sandwiches.
one place not mentioned is the pizza shop on the south side of canal street as you come out of the 6 station.
although perhaps not the ultimate bahn mi experience, it is very strategically located, and bahn mi is just the sort of food one would grab on the run...
the wonders of how eating can be improved with an unlimited metrocard... one only wishes that the 4/5 stopped at canal as well.
I should redraw the NY subway map with eating locations at each stop...

There's a fantastic place below between East Broadway and Division, right of Eldridge. I think it's called Saigon Banh Mi. It's below the manhattan bridge. They sell a variety of foods, but they only make one thing. bahn mi. It's very popular, and sometimes the wait for a sandwich can be as long as 20 min. Go earlier in the day if you go too late (after 3pm), they'll have sold out.

For reference, since this thread has been reincarnated 7 years later, the East Broadway/Division location of Saigon Banh Mi no longer exists. It's now at Grand & Mott, as described above.

There's a place near Walker on Lafayette that I've always wondered about. It looks like it used to be a bodega that got some notoriety for their Vietnamese sandwiches, but the reviews all seem to be several years old by now. Anyone know the place?

I've been there once or twice (forget the name). I recall the meats being a little too funky for my taste. Strange bread too. Cool desserts though.

Thanks...sounds like my intuition was pretty right on then. I was too scaredy to try it.

It is called Sau Voi Corp and it is at 101 Lafayette. It is not nearly as good as Saigon or the joint on Broome street. It is however better then the worst Bahn Mi store in town, Paris Bahn Mi.

I've actually had one (but only one) very passable roast pork banh mi at Paris Sandwich. I'm fairly certain they premake sandwiches very early in the day though, and that Iucked out with a fresh one.
I've basically limited all my banh mis to Saigon and Ba Xuyen.
