I was reading through a discussion on Vietnamese sandwiches (called bahn mi I guess?) in the SF message board and was intrigued. Can anyone tell me of a place to find a good one in Manhattan? I must admit I've never actually tried one, and am interested in experiencing the Viet-French fusion of this thing, with Viet-French toppings served on a crusty French roll. Sounds very interesting!

there's a really good vietamese sandwich shop on broom st., between mott and elizabeth. they only offer two sandwiches, chicken and pork, but both are delicious and really inexpensive ($2.50). the folks that run the shop, which seems to push various juices more than sandwiches, are very friendly.

My coworker just got us Vietnamese sandiches / Bahn Mi-s from Grand & Mott -- "Saigon Bakery" -- its a Jewlery store with Bahn Mi-s in the back.

These were simply put the best sandwhiches ever. The pork is super slow roasted and tasty, cucumber to cool you down, jalapenos to give it some kick. As for it spicy!

there are several threads in the archives discussing vietnemese sandwiches.

one place not mentioned is the pizza shop on the south side of canal street as you come out of the 6 station.
although perhaps not the ultimate bahn mi experience, it is very strategically located, and bahn mi is just the sort of food one would grab on the run...

the wonders of how eating can be improved with an unlimited metrocard... one only wishes that the 4/5 stopped at canal as well.

I should redraw the NY subway map with eating locations at each stop...

There's a fantastic place below between East Broadway and Division, right of Eldridge. I think it's called Saigon Banh Mi. It's below the manhattan bridge. They sell a variety of foods, but they only make one thing. bahn mi. It's very popular, and sometimes the wait for a sandwich can be as long as 20 min. Go earlier in the day if you go too late (after 3pm), they'll have sold out.

I've basically limited all my banh mis to Saigon and Ba Xuyen.
