Barney Greengrass Non-Update

All this talk about B.G. led me inexorably to the establishment for lunch yesterday. And all I can report is that it is still exactly the same, and still wonderful. Nova/onions/eggs still the best I've had anywhere. This is also one of the few establishments anywhere where I will ask for a toasted bagel. BG's never burns the bagels -- a rarity, in my experience.

Took the opportunity to take home some chopped liver, and ended up making that my dinner.

Didn't read my cholesterol count today but my mood has brightened considerably.

  1. OK that settles it. It's on the list for my six day whirlwind culinary tour of NYC. Even if I have to have four meals one day.

If it's reassuring at all, the portions are not as huge as in most NYC delis. The nova/onions/omelet lies alone on the plate, with nary a sprig of parsley for garnish.

But don't be deceived. It is filling. The chopped liver ain't exactly nonfat either, but somehow I can eat enormous amounts without anything but my scale feeling ill-effects.

I live near Barney Greengrass. Roughly once every 2 years I go there after reading a good review. It always seems to have remained thoroughly mediocre. The portions are small. The quality is only OK.

Agreed that Barney Greengrass does not serve Carnegie Deli-sized portions, and they are just as expensive.

But if you find the food "mediocre," (and I assume you are referring to the specialties), care to share where you find the nova (or sturgeon)/onions/eggs or chopped liver to be superior?

            What have you tried?

I've always found the portions somewhat overwhelming -- there's only so much smoked fish you can eat. As for quality, the only better I can think of is Russ and Daughters, and you can't sit down there.

      2. Barney Greengrass is a time capsule of old New York.
Last year on my birthday I treated myself to their caviar sampler, which was terrible,my only bad experience, the caviar was old.

Otherwise I found their smoked fish great. If you ask real nicely see if they will make you a pickled lox, eggs and onions omelette , and you will feel what heaven is like. I eat this dish often cause its the closest I will ever get to heaven.
