Gosh, can't help you for NY, but I've been to this type of restaurant in Taipei. Was this Asian?

    1. I seem to remember that this place was reviewed in the Village Voice...Mr. Sietsema?

      1. You know... A Japanese friend of mine pointed out a place like that to me about 5 years ago. It was a dingy basement restaurant around 55th Street (or 54th) just west of Lexington Ave, and it was called Hikaru.

I never did get to try it. When I finally developed a taste for eel and made my way over a few months ago, I found that it was CLOSED!

Drag. Best of luck finding something comparable.
