Singapore Chow Mei Fun: My Rosebud

ali Aug 21, 2000 07:53 PM

The late Hong Fat (54 Mott St) made the best Singapore Chow Mei Fun for curry addicts, plus it was loaded w/shrimp, chicken, pork & omelette bits...then one day they were gone! That was a few years ago & since then I order it everywhere& it's nothing like Hong Fat's. Not enough hot curry, no pork, chicken, tiny shrimp. Any Singapore cuisine addicts out there? Surely, Gary, you'd know?

I've never liked Singapore Chow Mei Fun at various Chinese restaurants - too much harsh commercial curry powder. In fact, I think it's a made-up dish by them. I've never had it growing up in Singapore.

You should just go to Nyonya or the Flushing Penang and have the Char Kway Teow.

Thanks, Gary, for your help. I've never heard of Char Kway Teow, and I'll check it out. But I'll still wander around searching for my Singapore curry fix.--ali

My favorite dish at Penang. Shrimp, squid, noodles, mmmmm! Best with the roti canai. Also, the other canai is great (with egg & scallions - I forget the name). Maybe this weekend... I'm salivating already!

Duuhhhh Charles ......authentic char kway teow IS cooked with lard!!! Before you say I don't know what good food is, do YOU know anything about Singapore or Malaysian food???? Have you been to that part of the country?

If you don't like that kind of food, that's your choice, go somewhere else. Penang restaurant is what it is -- if you want "service", maybe you should stick with Lespinasse.
