didn't make it to po...notes on other spots

hello friends...saw my sister off at the airport last night...and now i'm a little sad and lonesome :(

we didn't make it to po...which i was pretty disappointed about...but after we saw rent (my sister's first taste of broadway/ny theater), julie was so thrilled she wanted to see another show...so we debated -- being on a limited budget -- a second night of theater or dinner at po. she opted for theater. it's all good. we had a great time...and she's not as much of a chowhound as mom and i...

anyhow, a couple of places we did make it to:

sweet-n-tart in manhattan -- sis said beef congee was the best...scallion pancakes were excellent...but the lo mein (mushroom) we had was not-so-hot...it was drowning in sauce...i've had the same dish there before and found it to be top-notch. wondering if more sauce is catering to a more-more american palette? (is that offensive? do you know what i mean? bigger portions, extra sauce kind of thing?) dining room was filled w/ many non-asians (not really so on earlier visits).

kum gang san in manhattan -- i've only had korean food a few times, and this is the first place i'd been to...an introduction by korean friends...so i took sis here...she says "it's the best korean food i've ever had..." it's the first korean food she's ever had...turns out she might not like korean food so much...she had kalbi, i think? (i don't eat beef so didn't share any.) i think she found it too sweet...i had gopdol bimbimbap, which was very good, as usual.

tomoe sushi -- folks give mixed reviews of this place, but it's been great to me. sis loved it, too. sat at sushi bar and chatted with sushi chef, waiters, and other customers...we had a sashimi and sushi dinner plus a couple of rolls. everything was great, but i think the standouts that night were scallops, ikura, and squid. maybe b/c those are not the usual things people look for, but i dig, i always remember them more (vs tuna/toro or yellowtail or something, which we were all really really excellent).

pisces -- were walking by to somewhere else, but passed by pisces and decided to have dinner...sis's special of bass w/ some kind of mushroom/tomato/corn ragout was excellent. my paella was not so...

ny noodletown -- wonderful softshell crabs (natch). excellent congee. ordered pea shoots, but still hadn't come by the time we were finishing everything else, so we cancelled that...they said something about wanting to bring them later, but i think they just forgot.

what else? probably julie's favorite thing? the carrot cake we picked up at dean & deluca! delicious!

cheers
cj

Hey CJ, thanks for the update. I am always craving updates so I just wanted to say: thanks! It sounds like you guys had a lot of fun. It often happens that the least planned thing (picking up carrot cake at Dean & DeLuca) is the best!
BTW: just to be a nag, you did call PO and cancel your res......right???
