Driving up 1st ave last week, we noticed a place called Pupuseria San miguel on 109th between 1st and 2nd. Check it out!

  1. Why should we check it out? I'm assuming that pupuseria means someplace that specializes in pupuses, but what are those?

Pupusas are delicious grilled cornmealpancakes native to El Salvador and stuffed with cheese, chicken or beef and often topped with a peppery cabbage slaw. They're eaten as fast food - often served from carts - but I've seen pupuserias in Washington Heights, Woodside, Sunnyside, & Jackson Heights/Corona, but this is the first I've heard of one in East Harlem.
