I'm an UWS'er and so was glad to hear Balducci's was going to add to our embarrasment of riches of mega-food stores. It opened today and, of course, I stopped in to check it out and buy stuff for dinner. Merchandise is pretty much the same as downtown but there is a decidedly more obvious Heyday presence with alot of items bearing Heyday labels or signs. The thing which irritated me about the place was the narrowness of the aisles. It wasn't that crowded despite it being opening day, but I can't tell you the number of times I said "excuse me". Sort of fitting that a store full of stuff to clog your arteries has it's own clogged arteries. Ah well, at least I don't have to go to the Village for what I think are some of the best steaks and veal chops in town. On the plus side are an expanded "tavola" section (if prepared food is your thing) and a much expanded cheese section.
