Could use some suggestions: I am looing for a restaurant for dinner below 34th street, romantic, not incredibly $$$, with terrific food and a nice feel to it...outside garden a plus. Any cuisine is fine...Appreciate your suggestions. Thank you!

Romantic with garden below 34th: how about Gascogne, on 8th Ave. @ 17th. Lovely back garden, not too pricy, and lovely bar, too.
Barolo on W. Broadway is pricier, but has a larger back garden.

Gascogne. Cute garden in the back, but a nasty French waiter bearing faux-thick accent who poo-poos your order of a pre-lunch ginger ale. Every nightmare stereotype of a snob French waiter come true. Food? Eh. Not so much.

A better bet in the same hood would be Alley's End on 17th Street between 8 and 9 ave.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience at Gascogne, but I have a friend who used to live right near there and had countless romantic dinners there with her then long-distance boyfriend. It became their spot so I was going to recommend it, though I have never been.
Another lovely place is The Chelsea Bistro. on 23rd betw. 7th and 8th. The service was very warm yet a little formal, the setting is pretty (banquettes upholsered with tapestry, pretty wooden bar with lots of flowers, etc.) and the food was quite good. It's the kind of place that I would be happy if my significant other took me out there.
        Good luck.

I've never been, but have many friends who swear by Sonia Rose (Lexington, 28th/29th) as a great romantic spot. It's French.
