Jack's Fifth

Ate there last night - my steak was quite good and served with yummy lightly fried very thin onion rings - chived mashed potatoes were green which bothered all of us slightly and no one seemed overly enthused about them anyway - warm foie gras (not the best foie gras I've tasted but fine) and seafood sausage (on tasty spinach) appetizers were quite satisfactory (both recommended by Wm. Grimes in his Times review) - glass of pinot noir the waiter suggested was light and interesting (I am not a wine conoisseur by any stretch of the imagination) - my husband had short ribs (also recommended by Grimes) and pronounced them good, not great (he always orders short ribs when available) - he also thought his salad appetizer with house vinaigrette was too salty but I love salt and thought it was wonderful - our friends had the sliced duck entree (with cider sauce) and roasted chicken entree which they completely finished and seemed to enjoy. Our waiter was a bit surly at first, warming up as the evening went on - restaurant is down 2 flights of stairs which could be a problem for the elderly. Also there was a private party in the bar at the front of the restaurant which ended about 7 and was noisy unless you sat in the back of the restaurant, which we did. The maitre'd told us the moment we arrived that they would be gone by 7 (our reservation time). All in all a good, not stellar, dining experience - booths and decor very comfortable - you are never too close to the next table - I would go back - my husband says he would not not go back (if you follow that) but would try the chicken next time.
