Sahadi's, on Atlantic Avenue (between Court St. and Clinton St.) in Brooklyn Heights, has an excellent selection of dried herbs and spices, avilable in bulk. Not much in the way of fresh herbs there, but if you were to go there to satisfy your dried herb needs, the Green Pea grocery down the block has good fresh herbs in bunches.

I second those two suggestions and would add (in no particular order): Adrian's caravan - mail order or the outlet at the Marketplace in Grand Central Terminal (and maybe more?); Aphrodisia on Bleecker St. (so. side) just east of 7th Ave. So.; the Park Slope Food Co-Op (members only, but maybe you know one if you just want a few things); or Pennzeys (I particularly like their Vietnamese cinnamon and crystallized ginger--ignore the cutesy, powdered-cheese-inflected salad dressings and so on-- their stuff in general is unbeatably fresh) they have a store right near Stew Leonards in CT (Norwalk, I think), or mail order, or order on-line.

I get all my herbs and spices at Bell and Bates natural food store on Reade Street. They have an amazing selection and since everything is simply packaged, it's all cheap. Since this discovery, I've had to double my spice racks!

In Manhattan you'd do well to go to Aphrodesia on Bleecker between 6/7th Aves (across from Cornelia Street). There's a "good witch" vibe and she has a large selection of dried herbs, peppercorns, spices, etc at good prices.

After you hit Kalustyan's (which is heaven), go around the corner to Little India on 28th Street between Park and Lex. It's the only place in Manhattan that regularly has fresh methi (fenugreek) leaves and the selection of desi spices is excellent.

"Noticed yesterday that Angelica's Herbs is defunct."

I believe you are incorrect. I will walk by to check on it, but I think the explanation is that the store is closed on Thursdays. Did you walk up to the store and check on its hours before concluding it was defunct?

Thank you Michael for suggesting that Angelica's might not be defunct. It is indeed open every day but Thursday and it wouldn't have occurred to me to check if it wasn't for your post. Thanks also to the Chowhounds who made some other great recommendations.

Kalustyan's on Lexington Ave. (east side of st.) around E. 30/31 St. near all the Indian restaurants -- i was just there the other day and got 4 oz. of fennel seeds for $1.99. They have just about every spice you can think of, esp. the ones used in Indian cooking -- also big jars of mango chutney that are good and much, much cheaper than the little jars of Major Grey's in the supermarket. And where else can you find Jordan pistachios? Kalustyan's rocks!!!

Angelica on 1st Ave. is indeed defunct; I was told they lost their lease. The store is completely empty with no sign indicating a new location and the phone gives no new number, but rumor has it that they relocated to Flatbush, Brooklyn - don't know whether that means the n'hood or the avenue. If anyone knows more, PLEASE let me know. Other shops may sell herbs, but no others are likely to have their medicinal tea blends; I rely heavily on them for getting rid of colds!.

For bulk herbs, in addition to Aphrodisia mentioned below, Integral Yoga Apothecary on W. 13th St betw 7th & 8th [across from their grocery] has a pretty good selection; also Flower Power at 406 East 9th St. [E.of 1st Ave., kitty-corner from Angelica's old location].

I'll bet you Dual, on 1st Av. between 5th and 6th, will sell medicinal tea blends if they believe there's a market for them. Try talking to them if you haven't already done so.

No need, I found them! I called the old number and left a message even though there was no OGM confirming it was still their number - and lo and behold, Chantal, the proprietor, called me back this morning. [I will check into Dual, but Angelica's blends are unique - the Prompt Detox usually completely cures my colds [if caught early] within a couple of days [and I'm typically a 10-day cold person] and the deeper bronchial detox formula knocked out a 6-wk lingering bronchitis in 5 days.]

So, Angelica's new location is [sorry, not easy for Manhattanites] 222 Tompkins Ave at Kosciuszko St. [B38 bus to Lafayette Av and Tompkins Av, north on Tompkins.], phone 718-388-2534; open 1-6 pm except Thursdays. Not so easy by subway; closest stop is G train to Myrtle-Willoughby. [hopstop.com is a great resource for directions like this.]

Is the new address you mentioned for Angelica's Herbs located in a church? I went to the address you mentioned and I didn't find anything posted. It was almost 6pm when I got there so I just ditched the idea of finding this place. Where is the entrance? I didn't see any sign referring to this shop.

How much was that prompt detox and the bronchial detox you mentioned? Is it a tea?

I read that a blend of helichrysum oil, eucalyptus oil, frankincense oil and sweet almond oil was good to rub on your chest for colds. Would she carry this also?
