Has anyone been to Isla?
I am going to Isla, the Cuban restaurant in the West Village this weekend. Any recommendations?
re: Glyn Johnson
I was there shortly after it opened and thought everything was underseasoned like crazy. It was as if the chef had been told to gringoize. Not that Cuban or Nuevo Latino has to be spicy-hot, but this was just too dull in every way. However, I went there a week ago for drinks and the bartender suggested I give it another try. "We're really hitting it now," he said. He made a perfect agua fresca with pineapple and mango juice, and a pretty good mojito too.

I went to Isla on Friday and I thought the food was quite good, although I agree that it could have been spicier.
We started with the mussels and also had plantains stuffed with ground beef as our appetizers. The plantains were better than the mussels. Then we had a steak in a red wine sauce with yucca fries (the fries are not like french fries, rather they are large pieces of yucca that have been fried) which was good, a duck breast that was excellent (the best dish we tried) and some fried shrimp that were good as well. No desserts were ordered. The room was pleasant too, although the bar was too crowded as we waited for our table.
The mixed drinks were tasty - I tried the Isla colada and another drink with pineapple in it too and both were good.
