Japanese Takeout on UWS

Just went to a tiny Japanese takeout shop just off Bway on 109th, called Saji's. It's a colorful little storefront with a cheerful vibe. Ordered seaweed soba that, while it had scant vegetables, was FULL of seaweed. The broth was redolent of that sweet saltiness and it was oh-so-delish. It was a lot of soba and soup for $6.25. Also had Saji's Donburi -- tempura of shredded onion, carrot, and green pepper over rice and special sauce. While it wasn't as good (a little soggy, actually) it had been cooked in fresh oil, and the pickled ginger that came with it was exceedingly fresh also. I asked how long they'd been open -- two months only, and business hasn't been very good. I urge you to check it out -- it's a good alternative to ordering from Tomo around the corner, and the soup noodle was better. And while you're in the neighborhood, go to JAS Mart -- a small Japanese grocery store on Bway between 110th and 111th. A small division of the larger Yaohan Plaza in Jersey, they have many basic items, from frozen gyoza to dashi, to soups and teas. Please let me know what you think!

  1. @@@Thank you for comeing my store "Saji's" and I appreciate your message. When you stopped by the store, I wasnt't there(only at that time).I'm working the store from 6:00pm to 10:00pm usually.
I was very happy to hear that you liked our "seaweed soba" and I'm sorry that Saji's Donburi was soggy. We supposed to separate Rice and Special Sause when we served Donburi.
Now, I'm expecting to talk about our foods more and more. Please come again. We'll make effort to serve real Japanese homestyle dinner for you!

    2. I live around the corner, and I hadn't heard about this place until I saw this post.

Got the regular sushi a few days ago (take out) and enjoyed it. I thought it was better than Tomo, where I've never had a particularly good meal and once had really lousy service (I don't think the service is always lousy, although it's usually rushed and not too good).
