Several of us from my office had lunch at Cibo (41st
St. at 2nd Ave.) a couple of weeks ago and found the
food to be wonderful. I started with one of the
specials, a wild mushroom soup that was woodsy and deep
-flavored, rich but not overly creamy, garnished with a
lovely pile of several types of mushrooms and a few
rings of cilantro and red pepper (not spicy) oil. Two
of us shared this (we have found that we can taste more
things when we share dishes) and they were nice enough
to bring it in 2 bowls with 2 sets of garnish. For my
main course I just had a sandwich - but what a sandwich
- I'm still craving another! It was a soft-shelled
crab on focaccia with arugula and a gently flavored
mayonnaise. The bread was just slightly oily (I like
it this way) and had a hearty, but not overly crumbley,
crumb. The crab was perfect - no overcrunchy shells,
just mildly fishy flavor. All the flavors in this
sandwich blended into a greater than the sum of it's
parts treat. It was served with haricots verts and, of
all things, elbow macaroni salad, which was also
wonderful - creamy and flavorful, dotted with bits of
roasted red pepper. Other entrees included salmon,
another wonderful sandwich of lamb with hummus - I no
longer remember details of this, except that the eater
(a reliable chowhound) was extremely happy. Desserts
were also wonderful, but again, (sorry) I don't
remember too much. A lovely plate of sorbets, a
death-by-chocolate sort of thing. Sorry, it was all
overshadowed by my soup and sandwich. Service was
friendly and competent. Be forewarned, though: while
I felt it was a good value, it wasn't exactly a
cheap'n'cheerful sort of place. I'd be interested to
know if anyone else has been here and what your
reactions were.
