get thee to veritas . . .
just had a great lunch at veritas today, which is
located on 20th street between park ave. s. and
broadway. i guess they're known more for their large
selection of wines than their food, but i think the
overall experience there is top notch.
needless to say, their wine selection is breathtaking.
the wine list (book would be a more appropriate word)
has the heft of a mini bible. i was very pleasantly
surprised to notice that they have a great number of
wines more than reasonably priced at $20 a bottle or
very close thereto. we got the chateau cap de
fageures, a good young bordeaux, for $20. and even
though we got a cheap bottle, they still brought out
the serious red wine glasses. i can't stand places
where they give you little dinky glasses unless you
order something from the cellar. not the case here.
their prix fixe lunch is, in my opinion, a great deal.
$29 for three courses, and four or five choices for
each course, except for dessert, which is two. we all
started with the corn clam chowder, which was
excellent. kind of a mix between clam chowder and corn
soup, but not as salty and heavy as clam chowder and
not as unbearably sweet as corn chowder. lots of fresh
whole clams and juicy sweet whole kernels of corn that
exploded in your mouth when you crunched on 'em.
for my entree, i got the crispy skate (not a big
surprise for those of you that know me). also very
good, and the orzo that came with it was phenomenal.
cooked to perfection, light and tasty. the reports on
the salmon escalope and squid ink linguine were very
positive as well.
we all got chocolate souffle for dessert, which came
upside down and out of the container. cakey on the
outside and molten on the inside. not the best souffle
i've had, but definitely more than adequate.
i'd have to say, though, that the high point of the
place has to be its service. service with a smile is
an understatement. everybody is extremely nice and
helpful, from the hostess to the sommelier to the
waitress. and to top it all off, the hostess gave us a
round of dessert wine compliments of the house as an
apology for spilling a little bit of water when she was
pouring (not that we even noticed). in my experience,
that's unheard of. and don't think that that swayed
me, we were all loving the meal even before that point.
that was just like added bonus.
and if you're still skeptical, the chef came over from
indigo, which i also thought had great food.
in other news, the coach house gets a big thumbs down.
there's a reason classic american food went out of
style, it stinks, and it still does. in a nutshell,
the food is bland and boring, the place is like a
funeral home, and we had a secret service agent for a
waiter. he didn't even apologize when he gave me a
fork with a bunch of green gook all over it. veritas
beats that place hands down.
