Allamuchy Eats?

Does anyone have any suggestions for dinner anywhere in or close to Allamuchy, NJ? We may be meeting my sister and her family after my nephew's traveling soccer game (Panther Valley I think) and none of us know the area at all since we're from Union and Ocean counties.

Looking for someplace reasonably priced, hopefully with interesting food since all of us, including the kids, (13 and 11) are all into trying new foods. Any type of cuisine will be happily considered.

Thanks!

Laurie

A few weeks ago we had a wonderful dinner at Mattar's, on Route 517 just off Route 80 in Allamucy. Sensational crabcakes as appetizer. Be sure not to miss them. Tough choices for main courses--I had a delicious veal dish that was on the menu at that time. Good size portions. Very extensive wine list--we had a really nice zin from Montevina. It's not around the corner for us, but we are talking about going back soon.

Thanks for the suggestion but Mattar's is not "reasonably priced". We have two kids with us as I wrote, so we're not looking for a fine dining experience.

We will however, keep it in mind for ourselves if we ever are exploring that part of NJ on our own. The menu looks very nice.

      Laurie,
I recently stayed at Panther Valley on a work assignment. There is a wonderful, casual restaurant called Pub 119 about 4 miles north of Panther Valley Inn on Hwy 517. It is at the edge of Tranquility, NJ, across from a white church.

I owned a restaurant for years so am very picky - the food exceeded my expectations. Steaks, lobster, clams, burgers - and the prices are unbeleivable. The 14 oz. New York Steak and the 1 1/2 lb. whole lobster are priced at 12.95 each! There were many families there - I think the whole family will love it.

The restaurant at the Panther Valley Inn is average, at best... don't bother with it.

Head into Hackettstown down Rt 517 and stop at Mama's Pizza and Cafe Bocci-across from the Lowes and Applebees on Moutain Ave.
Family owned for 20+ years, great pizza and Italian food, family friendly, BYOB.
Can't miss if you have to head back in to Warren County!

Is there a website for Pub 119? I tried to find it, but I was unsuccessful. Exactly what town is it? It was not listed in Tranquilty, NJ. Thanks. Do they have a wine list or is it a BYO?

It's actually Pub 199. Be ready for a peanuts on the floor/bar type of establishment. Plastic forks, cups, etc. Prices are very low, and Jo Ann was right, the lobster (whole) and clams are good, but I can't agree on steaks (just one kind, not sure but I think sirloin) and burgers - not so good. Wines are of the boxed type, like Sutter Home, also served in plastic cups. If it's what you're looking for - it's, something to try.

Mattar's was awful when I went. Overpriced and poorly staffed, the server actually drizzled caramel over our house salads (iceberg lettuce, red cabbage and carrot shreds) instead of balsamic - wrong bottle. Food was nothing great.

Mamma's is good atmosphere for kids, but the food is really not good, especially for NJ.

So sorry, to be negative nelly, but Hackettstown and the surrounding area is tough, I've lived here for years, and we usually travel a bit - like to Morristown or Parsippany for good eats...

              dawner,

Totally shocked to see your neg experience at Mattar. Haven't been back there again, but does not sound like it's worth the drive for us.
