First Blueberries of the Season are Here
I picked up the first pick of blueberries in Hammonton, NJ this weekend and they were outstanding. The growers expect this to be the best crop in years, and last year's crop was excellent! The berries coming out of North Carolina this spring were not very good.
Thanks Ellen for the update. Can I buy the bluberries on the farm in Hammontown? or do I have to pick them myself? Also, I live in Manalapan, NJ and I wanted to know by where is Hammontown? I know it is South Jersey...just a little unsure of how to get there. Thanks!
Hammonton is just north of the AC expressway on Rt 206. It is a major blueberry producer and no need to pick your own. Just north of town on 206 I go to Glossy Fruit for produce and the Red Barn for great fruit pies -- they're basically across the road from each other. There is also a very good BBQ joint - Kingfisher II on Rt. 206 - about 15-20 miles north of Hammonton. It's run by the daughter of the original and great Kingfisher, now sadly deceased.
In mid-state I love the blueberry pies from Emery's Berry Farm and they have organic blueberries too - both picked and pick-your-own.

If you are looking for a farm stand closer to you, see the website below.
I was in the area today of Emery's, and since I'd read this post last night, I had fresh organic blueberries on my mind, so I drove the few miles more to the farm and was disappointed that they had no blueberries for sale and they acted like I was crazy and got no real answer when I asked "When will you have blueberries?".
(Their website had said "Mid-June" for blueberries.) Yet the "Pick Your Own" field was open(?), so I'm guessing those few people I saw in the field where picking their own green, unripe blueberries.
Did pick up a nice looking Blueberry pie, but after I drove away, I figured that the blueberries were frozen from last year's crop.
Stopped into another nearby farm (Kim's/DeWolf's) that has both a farm stand and a "Pick Your Own" option, asked for blueberries and THEY said they're not in season yet...
So, I'd call before driving down to New Egypt.
