trenton/princeton pizza
I am taking my picky teenage son to princeton to tour the university. I need to find a pizza place that meets a chowhound's standards while pleasing someone who cannot stand chunks of tomato in the pizza sauce. I can stop in trenton on the way or wait until we get to princeton.I have searched this board and the posibilites I have come up with are DeLorenzo's Tomato Pies in trenton and Old World Pizza or Conte's in princeton. If you know anything about the sauce consistency in any of these places please let me know. Once he has gone off to college I won't have to worry about such things anymore.
Thanks in advance.

A couple favorites from my college days in the area. I am assuming that they are both still there:
1. Divine Pizza in Hamilton (sicilian with breaded chicken)
2. Chuckles Pizza in Lawrenceville (double crust - buffalo chicken, carbonara, or fajita)enjoy. man, are you making me miss those 2.. may have to make the trip down.

I haven't tried DeLorenzo's in Trenton yet, but Rodolfo's in the Shop Rite Plaza in Montgomery on Route 206 State Road is the best in the Princeton area. Real NY style pizza and the sauce is excellent. We order from there at least once a week. Contes is good, but not as good as Rodolfos.

There are TWO Delorenzo's in Trenton. Cousins.
Hamilton Ave. is larger and you'll probably get in.
Hudson St is the one with the hotter brick oven. But be aware, that wait on weekends and most nights can be hour or more. It's not just for tables. Only one oven and they do lots of take out. MOST important to know is that the Hudson St location has NO RESTROOM. It's in residential neighborhood and only place is a bar a few blocks away.
But the BEST pie in Trenton is Hudson St and these two DeLorenzos are really only Tomato Pie/Pizza places left in the city./ When I grew up there in 50s and 60s there were 15 or 20 tomato pie places!

I love Delorenzos in Trenton but it's all about the chunky tomato sauce and thin crust with minimal cheese, so your son might not like that. I tried two different kinds of slices at Old World Pizza and it was just OK. I had the worst pizza ever (we ordered 12 whole pies with varying toppings) from Conte's as a takeout order. Even the folks who had recommended it agreed that it was pretty bad. I was assured that it's better if you eat in, but that sometimes even then it can be spotty. I haven't gone back. There is actually a pretty good pizza place with a wood fired oven in the Market Fair food court on Route 1 with all kinds of alternatives by the slice or whole pie. The down side is that it's a mall food court.

You should try Pizza Star located in the Pton. Shopping Center, Next to the Eckert drug store. Also check the reviews with the link below.
