Another Long Beach Island query (crab shack)

  • g

I've posted this to the Philly board, but thought I'd put it here as well, for those readers who might not look at the PA board, but know the Jersey Shore.

Can anyone reccomend a crab/clam shack type place on or near Long Beach Island? I'm interested in one thing and one thing only in this search: good, extremely fresh steamed shell fish (of any sort). I don't care about sides (though I wouldn't mind a good french fry with the fish), don't want fancy preparations, am not interested in a nice dining room. In fact I'd be perfectly happy to take my clams and crab elsewhere to eat them. I would rather not spend an arm and a leg, but don't mind paying a bit for quality. If it's a fish market that happens to sell some steamed clams, that's fine too, so long as the food is fresh and simply prepared.

  1. Try Alan's Clam Bar on Route 9 in New Gretna. It's on the way to Long Beach Island from Atlantic City area, but it's not on the island itself. It's great. Pretty basic stuff - great clams (steamed, raw, chowdered), mussels, oysters (raw, fried, chowdered) in a small shacky place. Lots of oyster crackers and horseradish. I think you have to bring your own beer, but I may be wrong.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm coming from Philly, but if it's not too far out of my way I'll check it out. If not I'll find an excuse to make a trip there a bit later. (I have to avoid too much extra driving because I generally have my three-year-old in tow).
