As the closer to a tasty but surprisingly pricey meal (chicken kofta and rice; assorted appetizers) at the Persian Grill in Whitemarsh, the waiter brought a small dish of a cardamom flavored halvah. Unlike the heavy and oily halvah I'm used to (think Joyva brand), this was light and fluffy - almost like cotton candy, but more shard-like, less flossy.

It was wonderful and unlike any halvah I've ever tried! Is this typical of Persian (Irani) halvah? If I go into an arab food market and ask for Persian halvah, will I get this again?

Any ideas where I could buy some in the Philly area, or online?

Thank you!

I would try Bitar's on 10th near the Italian market. They have a large selection of halvah, including what looks like homemade. Thank you.

Bitar's and Norma's are related (norma is sister in law) so you are likely to get the same selection at both. But I will have to give it a try again, as I have not had their halvah in a while. i remember liking one that came in a deli style cup container.

if you're in cherry hill, i highly recommend the oasis grill. the chef there was formerly at norma's, and the place is awesome. it's off 38 behind benash liquors.
