Traveling Across Pa to the University of Pittsburgh from NY. Most of the time will be on 78 West and the Pa Turnpike. Is there something that shouldn't be missed on the way? Alternatively what's my best choice for stopping for lunch.

What are my best choices for dinner, and breakfast in Pittsburgh, preferably around the university although I don't mind driving if its worth it.

Thanks to all

There's a thread of Oakland rec's a little farther down that you might want to check out (near WQED). In oakland breakfast at Pamela's is one of your best bets.

If you post more specifics - food preferences, price range - there are lots of places in and near to Oakland that I can suggest.

Thanks for the response.

I'd like one nice place for dinner, say max 40 pp.
without drinks.

The rest just good eats with just about any cuisine

Lucca is very nice (link below). It's located on Craig Street within walking distance from PITT. There's more casual fare on Craig at the Union Grill, Ali Baba and Star of India. You're also a short drive to Walnut Street in Shadyside which offers many dining possibilities including Girasole, Walnut Grill, Bikki, China Grill, La Feria. It's a very nice section with great food AND shopping. There are also countless inexpensive places near PITT on Forbes and Atwood Streets. Have a great time!

In addition to the recs in the earlier post -

For a nicer meal - there is Luna bar and Grill on North Craig Street - Italian/American. Outdoor patio for dining if the weather is good.

Il Valetto - Italian - last time I checked BYOB, very small but good food - right before CMU campus

Zarra's on Bigelow Blvd. - Traditional Italian

Maggie's Mercantile:
Upscale vegetarian (I have not tried this place yet - but below is some info)

Any of the Big Burrito group restaurants are good - I recently had an excellent meal at Casbah - all pretty easily accessible from Oakland (Mad Mex on Atwood Street in Oakland)
http://www.bigburrito.com/

If you care to venture to the South Side (many bar options - nice place to walk around) - across the bridge from Oakland, some more casual options:

Fat Head's - BIG sandwiches, great fries, interesting wing sauces. Love their Turkey Ruebens

Piper's Pub - Irish - good sandwiches http://www.piperspub.com/

Station Square is a fun place to visit as well (You will have to walk a bit or pay for parking)

Gandy Dancer across from Station Square has great mussels and seafood chowder - also a free buffet at happy hour

Bloomfield - Tessaro's for excellent hardwood grilled sandwiches, steaks and seafood.

Church Brew works - old redone church - great pizzas & more
