I've noticed over the past number years a large number of immigrants from the African sub-continent ending up in Pittsburgh, and I was wondering if any restaurants have opened to service this growing population.

Of particular interest would be Sudanese, Sierra Leonean, or Liberian food, but I'd settle for pretty much anything.

Sorry to say but that is one of the Areas that Pgh is sorely lacking.

I don't know of any existing African restaurants in the burg - there are events when some of the African Heritage and Cultural centers have African food but that is all I am aware of.

Anyone else?

I know nothing about African food, but I have heard of Road to Karakesh
320 Atwood Street
Pittsburgh PA 15213

I heard of it from someone who eats Indian food, and apparently they have Afghan, and African food too.

I have been interested in trying Maggie's for a while now. We have often gone by her place on 711S on the way to Ligonier. Good to know where it is.

This is a shame, as I've heard that Pittsburgh has one of the largest populations of Liberian and Somalian refugees in the country. Then again, I imagine that these populations have more on their minds than opening up restaurants, but, what better place to have a taste of home?

On a side note - I hit Spice Island Tea House on Atwood in Oakland and was impressed by their offerings, particularly the Rangoon Night Market Noodles - ask for them very spicy, and get some of the chili oil on the side. (A very smple dish, and well large enough for four people to share.)

Spice Islands is excellent - My meat eating friends also love the Rangoon night market noodles. I'm partial to the Ginger salad and tofu with bean sprout and I like that they trust the customer enough to make dishes as spicy as you ask. Too bad they aren't open on Sunday I could use a Spice Island fix.
