It is some of the best I've had in Philly. Mind you, that doesn't mean it ranks up there with what you'll find in the Carolinas, but I like it as much as anything else I have found around here, including Tommy Gunn's. I've had the ribs, root beer baked beans, and cornbread-- all winners. Prices across the board seemed reasonable.

They have a great attitude and friendly staff as well.

The place in Academy House? Phooey, I had ribs one night and they tasted like tire rubber. Brisket was without taste. They were out of a few items that sounded tasty. I thought the sauce was overly sweet and too tangy ....a cross between Memphis Q and Crolina but certainly not anything tasty. A real joint would make this place half way edible. I nowcrave Arthur Bryants or Fiorellas in Kansas City, MO for great Q

Zekes on 61st and Lancaster is the best I have ever had. Perfect meat, perfect sauce (for me) and very good sides.
The rib crib on Germantown ave is also quite good. I dont think that good ribs are supposed to be in upscale neighborhoods. The trip is part of the expreience.

My last few trips to Zekes, they were out of baby backs (they always are), and the regular ribs were so chewy as to be almost inedible. The sides are great, but for overall reliability we've turned to Tommy Gunns.

I was gpoing to try it but what you think is reasonable seems high to me for a rib place. $14.00 for Mac and Cheese and side salad.

And a QUARTER slab platter with 2 sides is $14.00

Anyway, they have a cute web sire (but you can't eat wcute web sites). I seem to rememvber soda are like $3.00. Not the kinds of place that will attrect familiies - that's for sure. But I may give it a try one day as the location is convenient to work.

Yeah, that seems a bit high, but that is coming from someone who has his BBQ imported from Kentucky.

My wife's work takes her to Kentucky a few times a year and she packs a cooler with pulled pork and ribs from a place down there.

The last haul was 3 pounds of pulled pork and 2 racks of ribs for about $40. And they vacuum pack it all for her!

I had given up on getting any kind of good BBQ around here, but I still might give The Smoked Joint a try based on some positive reviews I've read.

Roughly 20% of the time (which admittedly isn't much), Ron's Ribs on South Street has pork ribs that are spot-on perfect. His hot sauce isn't great, get the medium on the side. Too often though, his stuff has been sitting in a steam table and just falls apart.

I live pretty close to Phoebe's BBQ on South Street also and the only thing that's consistently good there is the brisket, which isn't amazing, just, shall we say, better than NO brisket.

There is a traveling trailer called Tex's Barbecue which I came across one weekend outside of Phila. (smelled it first, then had to try a couple of roads to find it) Ribs are smoked in a big old converted oil can as roadside BBQ generally is, and the sauce is pretty unique--slow-burn, grainy texture. You have to keep checking their schedule to find out where they'll be, though:

Also, there is another trailer which sits outside of Gershel Bros. retail supplies in N. Phila. which serves very tasty, smokey BBQ beef and chicken sandwiches.
