Having just moved from Arlington, VA to Erdenheim, PA (Montgomery County, right near Chestnut Hill), I am grieving the loss of Five Guys burgers in my life and am in search of a truly good burger and fries.

Any ideas?

BTW, if you're ever in Northern VA, Five Guys is the best place for burgers!

Well, I dont know about GREAT burgers, although Solaris Grill on Germantown Ave might be a good bet, but what you really want to do is go to McNally's in Chestnut Hill. Your neighbors can tell you where it is since it is kind of hard to find. Order a Schmitter and you may never eat a hamburger again. A Schmitter is a modified version of a Phila Cheese Steak.

Mmmm...we've had the Schmitter experience (and our arteries are still groaning...)- the other sandwiches there were good too. But we need BURGERS!

Had an OK one at Sorella Rose, but it wasn't GREAT.

There MUST be one out there someplace.

If you are really that desperate then get in your car and drive to center city. You have several choices. Monks on 17th ( I think) has great hamburgers, wonderful fries and terrific beers. Loie on 19th south of Chestnut has a great cheeseburger also with good fries and finally Rouge on Rittenhouse Square has a cheese burger on brioche.
Hamburger Mary's on Chestnut below 18th is just fair and way overpriced.
Any of the Marathon Grill resturants will also give you a good hamburger.
Finally, if its lunch go to Capitol Grille for a hamburger.
That should keep you busy for awhile.

Try McMenamin's. It's on Germantown Avenue, just a little south of the Chestnut Hill/Mt Airy border. Very good burgers and fries.

I live in the same area and there is one place I crave when I want a burger-- Blue Comet Bar & Grill in Glenside (5 minutes down 309). Great burgers, gravy fries (being from MD that strikes an extra special chord for me), and killer martinis to boot.

Union Jack's Pub on Limekiln Pike in between Oreland and Glenside also does a good burger.

Although I have to say that I fully agree with the Lucky Dog and McMenamins suggestions, as well.

Stay away from Halligan's Pub in Flourtown, at least for burgers. I got one the other night and it was a burnt crisp of a hockey puck.

The Kobe beef burger at Blue Horse (Rte 73 and Blue Bell-Penlynn Pike) is very good ($10 I think). LeBan even raved about it in his recent review. You can sit at the lovely bar and have a good beer on tap. It's a nice place to eat.

I can't speak for the burgers, but I never had anything that wasn't good at Fatty's on Willow Grove Avenue in Wyndmoor. In fact, Fatty's is the only thing I miss about the area since moving to far South Jersey (especially don't miss the traffic.)

At least once a month, I'll still drive to Wyndmoor just for their Buffalo chicken sandwich. It's grilled, not fried, and "hot" actually means hot and "suicide" is almost inedible (yet still delightful on occasion.) I always found their soups to be top-notch, as well as a few of the other entrees. Nice people working there too.

Getting a 5-guys burger in Philly is like getting a cheesesteak in DC. There are approximations and even great burgers here, but you'll never find exactly what you're looking for (I used to live within walking distance of the one in Arlingon).

skip overpriced center city places! mcmenamin's is one of the best burger/fries/beer combos around for your money. your best bet is when the regular cook (a big guy w/ blonde handlebar moustache) is working. plus their small staff is great & will get to you know very quickly. just don't go when the eagles are playing...
